Let’s start today’s post with a little quiz? In the following picture please find my deodorant.
If it is a bit hard to find, here is a hint. It’s the white stone in the green dish on your left. Rock?!…you use a piece of rock as your deodorant? Yep, here is a close up picture.
It all started while I was on vacation in St John’s, NL I came across a product that I had heard about before, but never tried called a rock or crystal deodorant (which came from a company in Vancouver, ironic eh?). It was $6 so I thought it might be worth a try since I had heard from some users that these stones can last a long time.
The stone is basically alum or more specifically hydrated potassium aluminum sulphate which has some antibacterial properties. So when you apply it to wet skin it prevents odor from forming. Since I was on vacation I gave it a try and my very brave wife helped confirm its effectiveness. After a hike one hot and humid day I was sweating nicely and she confirmed while she could obviously see my t-shirt was wet that she didn’t smell a damn thing. So yes it does work. I have now been using it for over a month and I have never had any skin issues from it either…which is impressive since I have had reactions to some commercial products.
Yet my big question is how long does a given stone last? Well according to my internet research…at least a year. Depending on the user…two or more is entirely possible. The time it lasts is likely driven by where you keep it. The stone after all is a water soluble salt, so in a high humidity environment (like your bathroom) it won’t last as long, but in a dry environment (oh, like the middle of the prairies) it could be years fairly easily. So even at 2 years that drops my deodorant cost down to $3/year.
Overall, I like the stone and don’t mind using it at all. So has anyone else tried a product like this before, if so, how long did it last you?
